Some destinations hold special places in our hearts, either because of a sentimental reason or a great experience we once had. We love these places so much we recommend them to friends and families.
But not everyone sees the appeal of your favorite travel spot. Some are hits, others are misses, and here are a few overrated cities you may want to skip, according to travel enthusiasts.
1. Miami

Residents and tourists alike don’t enjoy Miami. In general, Miami is an expensive city with terrible traffic and a non-stop partying atmosphere. If you’re into materialism and living an expensive lifestyle, go for it—otherwise, you may want to steer clear.
2. Paris

We have to mention Paris. Travelers en masse have borne witness to the stereotypical “rude Parisians” and can’t say anything nice about the cleanliness either. The City of Lights may be on your European bucket list, but visitors agree there are other cities to visit instead.
3. Beijing

Aside from the historical sites throughout the city, people find that it isn’t the cleanest place to visit in China. Also, unless you’re fluent in Mandarin or you’re used to Chinese culture, you might experience translation obstacles that could negatively affect your experience.
4. New York City

In fairness, most people are tired of Times Square and not NYC. Unfortunately, whether you’re in Manhattan or other neighborhoods in the city, you’ll still be faced with the expensive cost of living, dining out, and way too many people.
5. Dubai

As a major port city, there is a lot of travel in and out of Dubai, meaning tons of people. Visitors and residents also dislike how artificial everything feels about the city. And don’t forget the painfully hot summers and selfish drivers on the road.
6. Rome

Rome offers a lot of history, cuisine, and beautiful sights. Even so, thousands of tourists descend upon the city year-round, which doesn’t always lead to a relaxing experience. It also comes with pickpockets and scams that, unfortunately, many tourists fall victim to.
7. Los Angeles

Los Angeles is one of the most traveled-to destinations in the US, but it doesn’t have the best track record. Disneyland, Hollywood, and Santa Monica Pier are all tourist spots that attract millions of visitors. But with the overpriced cost of living, crowded neighborhoods, and disgruntled attitude of locals, it’s not necessarily worth a visit.
8. Berlin

Some visitors recommend skipping Berlin altogether. Unless you’re into dreary winters, expensive food, and are fluent in German. It seems like its nightlife and party scene are both played out and repetitive as well, which may have drawn visitors decades ago, but the atmosphere just isn’t the same.
9. Singapore

Visitors have felt that Singapore reminds them of one giant shopping mall—with super modern architecture that makes the city feel a bit artificial. This kind of atmosphere isn’t right for every type of traveler, which may be why some people opt for other cities to visit on their trip to Asia.
10. Nashville

Most people travel to the “Music City” to visit what has become known as NashVegas—the main strip of bars, clubs, and music venues in Nashville.
And it’s pretty much all country, all the time. This little section of the city is overcrowded and obscenely overpriced. You’ll probably have a better experience in Memphis.
11. Tokyo

More than 3 million visitors traveled to Tokyo in 2022. Sure, there are many historical sites and landmarks to visit, but these tourist destinations can be stressful and hectic (due to so many people in such a small area) for someone unfamiliar with the city. Travelers enjoyed Kyoto a lot more in comparison.
12. Cairo

Sure, seeing the Pyramids of Giza is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. But visiting Cairo itself may not be worth it. Visitors to the city experience a lot of hassling from local vendors and sellers, which not everyone is comfortable with. Not to mention Cairo is overcrowded, making traveling around the city extremely difficult.
13. Honolulu

Honolulu, like any other major city, is heavily congested with traffic and is always packed with tourists. And don’t forget, Hawai`i is one of the most expensive places in the US. The capital has a few historical landmarks worth the visit, but other cities throughout the islands offer a better traveling experience.
14. Dubrovnik

Thanks to Game of Thrones, Dubrovnik has become such a popular tourist destination it’s lost a bit of its charm. If you’re in the area, travelers recommend spending a day (at most) in Dubrovnik, but that’s it. With an overpopulation of tourists, it makes traveling throughout the city or relaxing on the beach less than ideal.
15. Cancun

For some young Americans, a trip to Cancun during Spring Break is like a rite of passage. You might be partying every night for a week, but it lacks any authenticity of Mexican culture. And because it’s such a tourist spot, you know it will be expensive.
