What are you scared of? I’m terrified of spiders, bridges, and bubbles, and I would never wish to work with any of those items during a job. Nevertheless, many jobs, such as entomologists and construction workers, deal with these common fears. Here are ten jobs to avoid if you have a specific phobia.
1. Acrophobia – Fear of Heights
If you suffer from the number-one fear in the world, you will not enjoy working as a construction worker. Throughout your career, you work on high platforms, are suspended hundreds of feet over the ground, and do a decent amount of work off the ground. An Electrical Linesman would be out of the question, as well.
2. Entomophobia – Fear of Bugs
Does the sight of a spider send you into a shocked state? Do you make your friends come over and remove roach carcasses from your house because you’re too terrified to go near them? You should not become an exterminator if you answered yes to either question. Exterminators get rid of pests and unwanted insects in houses and often have to witness swarms or infestations.
3. Hemophobia – Fear of Blood
Can’t stand the look of blood? Get woozy while trick-or-treaters splay fake blood on their costumes? Phlebotomy is not a profession for you. Phlebotomists draw blood from patients, and during training, other students practice poking and prodding you.
4. Bibliophobia – Fear of Books
Books are daunting. I used to work in a bookstore, and the overwhelming amount of literature stored in the back room made anyone woozy. However, I’ve never met anyone with a fear of books. Nonetheless, working as a librarian is not in your favor if you have one.
5. Belonephobia – Fear of Needles
Maybe you aren’t worried about the sight of blood but can’t bring yourself to handle a needle. You should stray away from becoming a medical assistant, nurse, or surgeon. People with this phobia may avoid medical care, including needles, such as receiving vaccines.
6. Astraphobia – Fear of Thunderstorms
Metereology is the worst career path for an individual experiencing astraphobia. Since meteorologists monitor incoming and ongoing storms, each work day would prove a difficult, daunting task.
7. Alektorophobia – Fear of Chickens
Feathered, fuzzy friends frighten those with alektorophobia. Alektorophobics may become dizzy or nauseous at the sight of the animal and experience intense dread and nervousness. Working on a farm is less than ideal for those with this phobia.
8. Arithmophobia – Fear of Numbers
As Ariana Grande whispers at the end of “34+35,” “Math class never was good,” but for Arithmophobics, geometry led to shaking, sweating, and anxiety. Arithmophobics are likely to pursue something other than a profession as a math professor or accountant.
9. Plutophobia – Fear of Money
People who deal with Plutophobia tend to avoid money at all costs. They may make poor choices to avoid dealing with a surplus of wealth or talk of wealth when the conversation arises. Therefore, Plutophobics will avoid working at a bank or a casino.
10. Ephebiphobia- Fear of Adolescents
Let’s face it, middle and high school are some of our worst years. Sure, we made formative memories and learned the building blocks for becoming respectable humans. Still, our brains don’t form fully at 15, and adolescents can be brutal. This fear could stem from media representation or experience, and those with it will avoid working in middle and high schools.
