America is corrupt, at least according to the Corruption Perception Index. With so many states and so much cultural diversity, America is a hub for people worldwide.
The states were ranked based on a weighted average of multiple metrics. These were taken from The Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB), States With Anti-Corruption Measures for Public Officials (SWAMP), and the Core for Public Integrity, which were used to create a corruption index.
1. Vermont

With a Corruption Index Score of 100, Vermont is the most corrupt state in the United States. Its terrible ranking is due to 42 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 3,753 adverse action reports from 1990 to 2020, and 831 medical malpractice reports from 1990 to 2020.
The state also received a SWAMP index score of 37 out of 100 and a state integrity score of 60 out of 100, which indicates the need for immediate action.
2. Utah

Utah comes in second with a score of 94.90 on the corruption index. This ranking is due to 48 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, a SWAMP index score of 31, and a state integrity score of 62.
Additionally, 7,699 adverse action reports and 3,673 medical malpractice reports were filed from 1990 to 2020.
3. Arizona

Arizona has a 94.82 on the corruption index due to 35,307 adverse action reports filed from 1990 to 2020. The state’s corruption is demonstrated by 38 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents and 7947 medical malpractice reports filed from 1990 to 2020.
While the SWAMP index score is 28 out of 100, the state’s integrity score is 64.
4. Oregon

Oregon is the first state on the list with a corruption index score of less than 90. It scored 86.81 with 50 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 18,012 adverse action reports from 1990 to 2020, and 3,737 medical malpractice reports from 1990 to 2020.
Along with these figures is a SWAMP index score of 55 and a state integrity score of 59.
5. Colorado

With 44 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents and 26,103 adverse action reports filed from 1990 to 2020, Colorado has a corruption index score of 83.35.
From 1990 to 2020, 5,369 medical malpractice reports were filed, and the state received a 57 on the SWAMP Index and 67 on state integrity.
6. Idaho

Idaho scored 82.26 on the corruption index scale, making it the sixth most corrupt state. It has a SWAMP index score of 16 and a state integrity score of 62. From 1990 to 2020, about 2,921 adverse action reports and 1,190 medical malpractice reports were filed.
Additionally, 39 public corruption convictions were recorded per 10,000 residents, which gives the state its ranking.
7. Iowa

Iowa has a similar score to Idaho but is slightly less corrupt, with an index score of 82.14. Its ranking is due to 40 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 10,100 adverse action reports from 1990 to 2020, and 3,480 medical malpractice reports filed during the same years.
The state also received a SWAMP index score of 40 out of 100 and a state integrity score of 67 out of 100.
8. Minnesota

Minnesota scored 78.42 on the corruption index scale from 1990 to 2020. This can be attributed to 46 public corruption convictions, 15,681 adverse action reports, and 3,362 medical malpractice reports.
The state also recorded a 46 on SWAMP and 62 on the integrity scale.
9. Nebraska

Nebraska takes the ninth spot on the corruption index with a score of 77.18. It has a state integrity score of 67, 43 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, and a 60 on the SWAMP index score.
Additionally, 7,643 adverse action reports and 2,303 medical malpractice reports were filed from 1990 to 2020.
10. Washington

Washington follows close behind Nebraska with a 74.81 on the corruption index. The state also has 49 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 31,330 adverse action reports from 1990 to 2020, and 8,378 medical malpractice reports from 1990 to 2020.
The state has a SWAMP index score of 78 and a state integrity score of 67.
11. Indiana

Indiana’s corruption index score is 71.65. This ranking is due to 33 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, a SWAMP index score of 28, and a state integrity score of 62.
Additionally, 17,734 adverse action reports and 8,948 medical malpractice reports were filed from 1990 to 2020.
12. North Carolina

With a score of 70.82, North Carolina is the twelfth most corrupt state. Its metrics include 41 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 21,543 adverse action reports, and 6,596 medical malpractice reports from 1990 to 2020.
The state also has a SWAMP index score of 42 out of 100 and a state integrity score of 65 out of 100.
13. Wyoming

With 26 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents and 2,497 adverse action reports filed from 1990 to 2020, Wyoming has a corruption index score of 70.53.
There were 738 medical malpractice reports filed from 1990 to 2020, which is one of the lowest numbers in the U.S. The state received a 12 on the SWAMP Index and 51 on state integrity.
14. New Hampshire

New Hampshire scores 70.06. This ranking is due to 47 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, a SWAMP index score of 67, and a state integrity score of 61.
There were 4,290 adverse action reports and 1,903 medical malpractice reports filed from 1990 to 2020.
15. Nevada

Nevada takes the fifteenth spot on the corruption index with a 69.90 score. It has a state integrity score of 57, 45 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, and 54 on the SWAMP index score.
There were also 9,566 adverse action reports and 9,566 medical malpractice reports filed from 1990 to 2020.
16. Michigan

Michigan’s corruption index score is 66.85. This ranking is due to 32 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, a SWAMP index score of 28, and a state integrity score of 51.
Michigan also filed 32,104 adverse action reports from 1990 to 2020 and 19,723 medical malpractice reports from 1990 to 2020.
17. New Mexico

New Mexico scored 63.13 on the corruption index. The state has 31 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 5,426 adverse action reports from 1990 to 2020, and 3,722 medical malpractice reports from 1990 to 2020.
New Mexico has a SWAMP index score of 36 and a state integrity score of 61.
18. Connecticut

Connecticut is last on the list, with a score of 59.35. It’s the least corrupt state in the U.S. on this list.
Connecticut has 29 public corruption convictions per 10,000 residents, 8,207 adverse action reports, and 5,475 medical malpractice reports filed from 1990 to 2020. It also has a 44 on the SWAMP index and a 71 on the state integrity score.
