Hollywood is notorious for inaccurate portrayals. However, some movies and shows truly take the cake when depicting certain professions. According to an online entertainment forum, here are twelve needlessly demonized jobs in Hollywood.
1. Defense Attorneys
Criminal defense attorneys are often portrayed as evil entities complicit in their client’s crimes. You may even see them being cheery when a malicious client gets away with murder. However, a user highlights that whether the defense or prosecution gets demonized from a storytelling viewpoint will determine the lawyer’s depiction.
2. Police Officers
The bad cop trope is real, but let’s not hate on police captains who just want their officers and detectives to do the job without breaking the law or completely messing up the court case with inadmissible evidence. Is doing things by the books really so wrong?
3. DMV Workers
Hollywood portrays them as “some combination of surly, apathetic, incompetent, or actual sloths.” A user asks us to think of how draining a single DMV visit is as someone patronizing it. “Now imagine having to be there every single day, all day long. Let’s give these people/sloths a break.”
4. Stay-At-Home Dads
A viewer shares how movies like Grown Ups make tasteless jokes about how emasculated house dads are. A spotless house and well-fed kids shouldn’t be a problem. However, the film shows the dad in a pink apron, and gets emotional. “What a girl. Taking care of the home is for girls.” is the implied message, according to one.
5. Investigators
It seems that Hollywood dislikes investigators who actually investigate. A viewer mentions Sully, where the investigators are portrayed as villains who want to blame Sully despite him saving a plane full of people. “It completely disregards that an investigation is warranted due to the fact that a plane went down.”
6. Social Workers
The infamous “kid snatchers” are a horrible depiction of social workers. They do more than just take kids away or give one-time monologues. One person shares how social work is one of the most challenging and troubling jobs, and yet, it receives hate from “the media, politicians, the people they are trying to help, and their families.”
7. Dentists
There appears to be no greater villain in Hollywood than the neighborhood dentist. However, one mentions that this portrayal is “usually pretty tongue-in-cheek” since people genuinely hate going to the dentist as it’s an unpleasant experience for the patient.
8. Musicians
Musicians are portrayed as worthless individuals sleeping on their friend’s couch or mega-famous rock stars. There’s no in-between that truly reflects an artist’s lifestyle. Many wish to see an “I make a decent living and I love what I do” type of musician.
9. Regular Office Jobs
“Hollywood has something against working a regular office job that pays the bills, provides decent benefits and retirement plans,” states one user. Another replies that this may be due to their tedious nature as they are the “antithesis of big hopes and dreams.” Office Space is one of the movies to portray it, and it, too, was about the misery of working a nine-to-five job.
10. Therapists
These wizards can turn ordinary, sane folks into blabbering, weeping machines. At least, that’s what Hollywood will tell you. “They only really hand over tissues” or express astonishment. This is not how therapy works. Many think such a portrayal only adds to the stigma against mental illness.
11. Professors
Any movie in a college setting is likely to feature a dean or professor who is absolutely repulsive and overly orthodox. A user shares how the plot is often about a bunch of students disliking the old man for not letting them indulge in destructive parties, and they get back to him by trying to get him fired.
12. Environmental Activists
A member observes that as far back as the ’70s, any character who stood for green energy or a similar cause was portrayed as an “over-the-top wacko.” This may be due to the big oil companies that owned or sponsored the studios.
