The 2024 election is less than a year away, which means Americans will soon be hearing the names of some key states during the election process. As the country begins to hear more and more about elections, knowing what states may have a more prominent role to play in the election is critical. These swing states could end up deciding on our nation’s next president.
Red vs. Blue
Purple states, swing states, or battleground states are states where the voting population is relatively evenly split between the two political parties. This means these states don’t fall into the typical red (Republican) or blue (Democratic) categories. Voters in these states tend to have a higher turnout, and voters’ exposure to political ads is also higher.
Purple States
There are ten states estimated to be purple states in the 2024 election. These states can determine which party wins an election. Their polling, voter registration, and voting history data contribute to how campaigns focus on these key purple states.
Arizona
Arizona has had demographic shifts combined with increased political engagement, which has resulted in Arizona’s turning purple. In the 2020 election, the Republican party received 49.1% of the votes, and the Democratic party received 49.4%.
Florida
Florida has a history of being a swing state. Remember the “hanging chad” incident in the 2000 presidential race? In the last election year, the margins between the two parties were close again, with just a 3.3% difference.
Georgia
Once a Republican stronghold, recent years and demographic shifts have made Georgia a purple state. Politicians are keeping a close eye on the state as 2024 approaches.
Michigan
The Midwest state has long been a battleground between Republicans and Democrats. Recent years are no exception, and the state is prepared for more close races this election cycle.
Minnesota
Traditionally, Minnesota has been a blue (i.e., Democratic) state. However, elections have become more competitive. In the 2020 election, the Democratic party won the state with 52.4% of the votes, while the Republican party received 45.3%.
Nevada
Nevada has a high Hispanic population, which makes it a purple state and a tight margin for either party trying to vye for votes.
North Carolina
The 2020 census granted North Carolina an extra electoral college vote, making the state even more essential in the path toward the White House. The state’s economic fortunes are mainly due to the presence of young, educated, racially diverse voters, yet retirees from other states keep politicians on the edge of their seats.
Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan have voted in lock-step since 1992. Now, the parties are courting Pennsylvanians as in previous years, hoping to earn the extra votes needed to declare victory.
Wisconsin
The 2020 election marked a 0.6% difference between the Republicans and Democrats. There is little room for error on either side in the next election cycle so that Wisconsin voters will receive many campaign visits and political ads over the next year.
Ohio
Typically a Republican state, a red state, Ohio is looking more purple these days. A recent ballot measure on abortion illustrates that the state could be leaning more blue than previously thought.
