Food can be a great equalizer across the globe because everyone can appreciate a good meal. It fuels us, connects us to a certain region, and we want it to be tasty.
But not everyone enjoys some of America’s classic dishes that we hold dear to our hearts.
1. Root Beer

No wonder visitors to the States claim root beer has a medicinal taste. Native Americans used sassafras root to make medicinal drinks. Eventually, it became a popular drink in the US, but the rest of the world would prefer to go without it.
2. American Chocolate

People often complain chocolate in the US is too sweet, isn’t refined, and lacks the smooth flavor of chocolate in Europe. We like it just fine.
3. Biscuits and Gravy

Don’t get confused, rest of the world. A biscuit in America is a fluffy, buttery bread (not a cookie or cracker), and when smothered in gravy, it’s delicious—even if you don’t think so.
4. Processed Cheese

String cheese, canned cheese, and even plain old American cheese don’t seem to live up to the standards of people outside the US. This is a pity because you can’t go wrong with a classic American grilled cheese sandwich.
5. Hot Dogs

A hot dog is a symbol of American life. It says summer barbecues, baseball, and county fairs. To the rest of the world, it says processed meat—which for them is a big no-no.
6. Grits

Popular in the south, grits are a type of porridge made from cornmeal. Unless you grew up eating grandma’s grits regularly, you might not like the thick, “wallpaper paste” texture, as one reviewer described.
7. Peanut Butter

It’s safe to say peanut butter is beloved in the US, but not in other countries. I once had a teacher from England look at me while I ate peanut butter on an apple. He shook his head with disgust and said, “Americans,” then walked away.
8. Candy Corn

In its heyday, candy corn was THE candy of the Halloween season. Americans love its bright colors, waxy texture, and sugary taste—even if no one else does.
9. Twinkies

Who doesn’t like a sweet, spongey snack in the middle of the day? Well, a lot of people. One person said, “I tried them once and it just tasted like deep-fried plastic. Disgusting.”
10. Sweet Potato Casserole

Here in the US we love a good mix of sweet and savory. And on Thanksgiving, many families enjoy a good sweet potato casserole topped with marshmallows. If the texture is too weird for you, that’s okay—we’ll enjoy having your share for you.
11. Meatloaf

Although a cousin to similar German, Belgian, and Dutch dishes, the rest of the world still snubs their noses at America’s meatloaf. We might drench it in gravy, but that’s what makes it good.
12. Sloppy Joes

It’s messy, meaty, and tangy. Americans love to chow down on a good Sloppy Joe. But for our friends across the pond, it may not be too common for their taste.
13. Jell-O Salad

If you were alive in the 1960s and went to a party in America, Jell-O salad was on the menu. Although not everyone appreciates Jell-O mixed with cheese, fruit, vegetables, or marshmallows.
14. Corn Dogs

The great thing about corn dogs is that you eat them on a stick, making them a staple carnival food in the US. Elsewhere, though, they’re not fans of the excess batter. Or the hot dog.
15. Spam

Don’t knock spam until you’ve tried it. Sure, it comes in a can, and no one knows what’s in it. But it’s salty, easy to prepare, and goes great with some teriyaki sauce.
