There are two types of activities in the world: things we do in public and things we do when we think nobody is watching. There’s a vast difference between these two activities.
From talking to ourselves to picking our noses, some people have no shame when doing eccentric things when they’re alone. Let’s examine some of the more memorable things people do when left to their own devices.
1. Have Full Conversations With Our Pets
While talking to our pets like humans is standard, most owners reserve participating in full-fledged conversations with their furry friends when no one is watching. Trust me, you’ll have memories for ages if you ever accidentally encounter someone having full-on conversations with their pets.
Although it’s not necessarily weird, it’s definitely an activity that will raise eyebrows if you’re caught doing it in public, which is why so many people do it when nobody is watching.
2. Talk to Ourselves
Our dialogues aren’t restricted to inner monologues and conversations with pets; no, countless people confess to talking to themselves often whenever they find themselves alone. I do it to break up the monotony of being by myself, which is expected (at least in my eyes).
Granted, problems arise when you talk to yourself in public. It can arouse suspicion and cause others to label you as an outright weirdo.
3. Smell Our Own Armpits
Do your armpits pass the sniff test? Checking for yourself is a near-impossible task when you’re around others, so most people smell their armpits when no one else is watching.
There’s a thin line between smelling fresh and being the stinkiest person in a room. The best way to give yourself the sniff test is to glance around, make sure nobody is watching you, and do it fast. If you play your cards right, nobody will be the wiser.
4. Dance Like No One’s Watching
The mantra is real: there’s no shame in dancing like no one is watching. In 2024, these wise words are everywhere, from home goods to internet hashtags. Do yourself a favor and listen to this invaluable advice.
When you think nobody’s watching, dance your heart out. Get weird with it. Let the music (whether you hear it or not) guide you and your body. We’ve all done it, and most of us will never pass up an opportunity to dance in the future.
5. Use Our Pets To Clean Things
Fluffy pets are fantastic companions. They’re cute and cuddly and never fail to make our days brighter. Interestingly, pet owners routinely confess to using their pets for a nefarious chore: cleaning things.
In various ways, pets are living, breathing vacuum cleaners, and many owners take full advantage of it. When no one is watching, allowing your furry friend to lap up any crumbs or bits of food that fall on the floor is convenient. It’s almost like nature intended for it to happen.
6. Narrate Our Every Move in Private
When nobody is around, and Morgan Freeman isn’t available to narrate every waking moment of our lives, many of us use the next-best option: ourselves. Who hasn’t had a running dialogue of narration happening when doing innocuous chores like eating, cleaning, and otherwise going about our business?
Self-narrating helps make life less boring, especially when you’re by yourself for longer than you’re accustomed to.
7. Come Up With an Escape Plan
It’s wild how our minds work when we’re alone and left with nothing but our own thoughts. Many people confess to coming up with elaborate situations in their heads, like what they would do if an intruder broke into their home, and determine how they would escape or otherwise survive the incident.
You can never be too prepared, and many men and women have an escape plan ready to be put into action at a moment’s notice!
8. Deposit Trash Underneath the Couch
People deposit crumbs and minor bits of trash under our sofas when no one else is around. Why collect a few crumbs and deliver them to the garbage can all the way in the kitchen when you can just push them under the couch?
Unfortunately, this habit always catches up to us in the form of moving the couch and sweeping up our mess sometime down the road.
9. Pick Our Noses
Even if they’re too high and mighty to admit it, I believe most people will privately admit they pick their noses when no one is watching.
There’s something oddly satisfying about doing it; it’s almost cathartic, as weird as that sounds. Picking your nose in private is preferable to picking your nose in public, which usually gets you shamed and embarrassed within a few seconds of attempting to do it.
10. Pray
Spirituality is an intensely personal part of millions of people’s lives. Praying in public isn’t as widely accepted in 2024 as it was 20 or 30 years ago, meaning many people do it when no one is watching.
Praying can take many shapes and forms, but being spiritual (and even devoutly religious) when nobody else is around is a habit that shouldn’t be shameful; in fact, it should be celebrated.
11. Take Practice Photos
Not everyone’s body or face looks fantastic from all angles. Subsequently, this leads to many people taking part in the time-honored tradition of figuring out their “good side” and their “bad side” by taking practice photos of themselves when they’re all alone in the house.
By doing this, you’ll always be prepared with the perfect pose (and angles) whenever somebody breaks out a smartphone camera at an inopportune time.
12. Leave the Bathroom Door Open
When you live with other people, whether family or a significant other, it’s common courtesy to keep the bathroom door closed when you’re doing your business. Nobody wants to see that.
Going to the bathroom when no one is around, however, is a different story. It’s liberating to use the toilet with the door wide open because “keeping the bathroom door shut” is a habit that’s been ingrained in us from a young age.
13. Privately Question Our Career Paths
Sometimes, we all question how we arrived at the professional stage of our lives we’re currently at. Privately questioning our career paths is something we all do, whether we’re freelancers or CEOs. Since it’s a very personal topic and not suited for open conversation (except for close family and friends), we’re usually left to our own devices in contemplating new career paths.
These intrusive thoughts pass, more often than not, and things stay relatively the same. However, these private moments sometimes act as catalysts toward a new professional path.
14. Creep on Our Friends and Family
When we’re alone with nothing but our intrusive thoughts, many of us engage in the time-honored tradition of “creeping on our friends and family on social media.” There’s no shame in it — we’ve all done it.
Whether checking out an ex’s Instagram or seeing what our aunts and uncles have been posting about lately on Facebook, checking in on your loved ones (or ex-loved ones) is a rite of passage.
15. Pass On Showering
This is a safe space. We can all readily admit we skip showering when we’re alone for an extended time, right? It’s like a personal competition to see how long we can go without getting obviously stinky.
I’ll admit I sometimes avoid showering in the name of “conserving water” (whatever that means), and I’m sure I’m not the only one. There’s something immensely gratifying going all caveman when you’re alone in a house for a few days.
