Over Half of Americans Seeking Job Change in 2024 – Here Are 12 Most Sought-After Careers in the U.S.

Over 50% of Americans are looking to make a major job change this year, according to a recent GOBankingRates survey. With many employers instituting a return to office, some workers may be searching for more elusive remote jobs, while others are looking to further their career or change careers entirely.

Whatever the reason, most people start their search online. We looked at the statistics and compiled a list of the 12 most sought-after jobs in the US, based on monthly online searches.

1. Nurse

Drum roll, please! The most sought-after job in the US is nursing, with more than 88,500 monthly searches online. That’s a lot of people wanting to become a nurse! Why is nursing so popular? 

Well, it’s a great way to strike that professional work-life and lifestyle balance, as it’s a career that doesn’t require a full-time commitment. You can find work in several geographical locations, and you can generally choose how much or how little you want to work. 

2. Therapist

Sticking with the healthcare sector, the 2nd most sought-after job in the US is a therapist, with around 88,200 monthly searches. Hot on the heels of nursing, a therapist is a popular profession as one gets to meet new people regularly and hear their stories. It’s also a great way to see different perspectives and meet people from all different ages and walks of life.

3. Real Estate Agent

Next on the list is a real estate agent, with just shy of 75,000 monthly searches. The attraction of becoming a real estate agent is definitely the earning potential. Those who are dedicated, hard-working, and willing to put in the time can reap the rewards of making some serious dollars. 

4. Police

With more than 61,000 monthly searches online, a police officer is the next most sought-after job in the US. While it can be dangerous work, it comes with its benefits – medical, vision, dental insurance, leave benefits, and attractive retirement plans.

5. Teacher

We now move into the education industry and the next most sought-after job in the US – a teacher. With more than 70,500 monthly searches online, a teacher can be highly fulfilling work. Being a teacher is highly attractive to those who are interested in shaping the future generation and making a difference. 

6. Pilot

Catch me if you can – an airline pilot is the next most sought-after job in the US, with just shy of 56,000 monthly searches. Let’s be honest: who doesn’t love a pilot? They are highly respected professionals in charge of their passengers and crew. While it’s an extremely satisfying job, it can also be highly lucrative, depending on the airline.

With shy of 50,000 monthly searches, a model is the next most sought-after job in the US. While it can be tough initially, with lots of competition and cutthroat clients, it can become highly lucrative once you get the ball rolling.

8. Actor

Moving into the film and TV industry now, an actor is the next most sought-after job, with just over 47,000 monthly searches. Acting is a great career for passionate and resilient people, as it can be quite unpredictable, and jobs can be sporadic.  

9. Finance Roles

With just under 46,500 monthly searches, finance roles are the following most sought-after jobs in the US. While the finance industry can be highly stressful, with a lot of competition and high barriers to entry, it can be highly lucrative. It can also promote personal growth as well as enable climbing the corporate ladder. 

10. Flight Attendant

A flight attendant is rounding off the top 10 most sought-after jobs in the US, with just shy of 39,000 monthly searches. Flight attendants often enjoy great benefits such as medical, dental, life insurance, and travel-related perks. 

11. Author

With just more than 36,500 monthly searches, an author is the next most sought-after job in the US. While it can be a challenging career to crack, those who become successful often have a strong will to succeed and are incredibly passionate about writing.

The final job on the list of most sought-after positions in the US is a sports coach, with just over 35,000 monthly searches. Being a sports coach can be extremely satisfying, especially seeing your team improve and grow. You could be in high demand and earn an attractive salary depending on how good a coach you are.
