Have you ever hated a job so much that you knew you would quit soon after getting home from your first shift? These users on a popular online forum didn’t even make it that far. They quit on the first day of work, and for good reason.

1. Lifeguard Misunderstanding

Before applying for a job, ensure you know the position’s responsibilities. One user says they trained a new lifeguard on their first day. When the recruit realized they had to get into the water to practice rescues, her face turned pale. They didn’t know they had to get in the water, even though that’s the entire purpose of a lifeguard. She walked out before her shift ended.

2. Unethical Sales Tactics

One commenter shares that they spent one day selling home security equipment before realizing the company he worked with had scummy practices. “The whole idea was basically to make it seem like you’re doing them a service and then lock the customer into five-year contracts,” he writes. He and his supervisor visited the home of a man who barely understood English, and the boss did his best to keep pushing and take advantage of the man’s lack of understanding. The commenter was disgusted and promptly quit.

3. Catch-22

It’s always a red flag when a company asks a potential employee to work for free. This respondent got a job at a gas station and agreed to hold off on getting paid until they learned the computer system. No manager was willing to train them when they arrived for their first shift. “I was just standing around kind of helping out on the forecourt but not knowing what I should be doing,” they say. Ultimately, they realized the company was trying to take advantage of them, and they left mid-shift.

4. Clock Out

An employee at a popular burger joint quit after their first shift because of their manager’s scummy clock-out policy. At 10:30 p.m., the manager told employees to clock out. However, they had just started closing the restaurant. It wasn’t until midnight that they ended up heading home, and they never returned for another shift.

5. Part-Time Surprise

After a company hired this forum member to work at their company full-time, they were ecstatic. They desperately needed full-time work to pay the bills. But when they showed up on their first day, management had other plans. “My manager called me in, sat me down, and explained that they’d have to cut me down to 15 hours a week because they’d hired too many people.” Horrified, they quit on the spot and looked for a new job that actually provided full-time hours.

6. Buffet Horrors

Restaurant horror stories are some of the most appalling. One user got a job at a buffet restaurant, and on their first shift, they carried a coconut cream pie out of the fridge and into the kitchen. On their way to the dining room, they accidentally bumped into an employee and dropped the pie face-down on the filthy kitchen floor. The other employee, who had worked there for years, scoped the whipped topping off the ground and slapped it back on the pie to serve customers. “I was horrified they served pie that had been on the extremely dirty floor and never went back,” they add.

7. Sticky Situation

One commenter worked one shift at a game store and felt it was going smoothly until they returned from their break. The store was eerily empty, and the manager stood in the center of the carpeted floor with a disgusted look. The employee noticed a horrible smell and saw a pile of poop on the carpet. Their boss saw them and said, “Oh good, you’re back, just in time. Clean that up. I’m going for lunch.” The new employee laughed and asked if the boss was serious. When it became clear that he was, this commenter walked out on the spot.

8. Imminent Danger

If you ever feel unsafe at work, that’s a red flag. One contributor shares a story about her husband’s first day working at a Subway. During training, he walked into the kitchen and saw a dozen knives stuck in the ceiling tiles, and the manager explained that they threw knives up there for fun. As they spoke, “another employee walked through the doorway and “WOOSH” – a knife fell and pierced straight through the bill of their hat,” the contributor adds. Her husband never went back to work there.

9. Stingy Break Time

Amazon isn’t known for treating its employees with empathy and compassion, and that’s no different in this story. One respondent says they decided to quit just moments into their orientation working at an Amazon warehouse. The manager explained how their fifteen-minute break worked: “Walking to the break room is two and a half minutes. Ten minutes of actual break and then two and a half minutes to go back to your stations,” the respondent explains. “It took me two and a half minutes to walk to my car, and I took a forever break.”

10. Rusty Ladder

One construction worker took a job years back, and his boss asked him to climb a ladder that was completely rusted. After looking at the worn ladder, the employee refused to climb it. His supervisor called him a wimp, and he climbed the ladder himself. “He got up about seven rungs before his foot went through one. I heard his foot snap as he fell. I called an ambulance and walked to my car in the parking lot,” they write.
