When something is trending, it’s unimaginable that it will disappear off the radar. Still, it’s human nature to seek change and follow shiny objects.
There are some trends you wish would never see the light of day again, and there are some that will make you cringe when you look back in twenty-five years.
1. Posting Your Entire Life on Social Media
Social media gurus suggest we share authentic content, but do we need to know every tiny detail of someone’s life? The oversharing snuck up on us, and we’ve become familiar with vicariously living through strangers who may later regret sharing their lives publicly.
2. Driving a Truck
The trend of driving enormous 4x4s has become accepted as a way of life. There is no need for an off-road vehicle to drive the kids to school or shop at Walmart when there’s no danger of getting stuck in mud or climbing a vertical mountain.
These giant trucks are an energy drain and far removed from being green. Perhaps we’ll swap for a turbo-powered boat when climate change takes a more noticeable grip.
3. TikTok Videos
TikTok is one of the strangest and most addictive social media platforms. You never know whether you’ll see a talking dog, a woman crying and wailing that their boyfriend dumped them, or someone trying to sell something you’ll never need, but you cannot drag your eyes away. TikTok is a trending platform because of the constant dopamine hit, but it’s a trend many hope will change within 25 years.
4. Naming Children After Celebrities
Perhaps it seemed like a good idea to name your child after Daenerys, Queen Rhaella, or Aegon because you love Game of Thrones. Your adult child may not be so happy about your choice in twenty-five years.
5. Denying Climate Change
We suffer from the false consensus bias, which makes us believe our choices are normal and appropriate, even when the evidence suggests we are wrong.
When you live an urban lifestyle, it’s easy to forget that the icecaps are melting and polar bears are struggling to find food. Something happening thousands of miles away doesn’t affect you. Yet. However, it’s easy to miss the micro-changes happening each year. In twenty-five years, our climate will plummet toward a world crisis if we deny climate change.
6. Buying Cryptocurrency and NFTs
When the crypto and NFT (non-fungible tokens) were popular, everyone seemed to want a piece of the action. In 2018, Bitcoin prices reached new heights and created multiple millionaires. Some NFTs sold for millions of dollars, and hundreds of thousands of people worldwide jumped on the bandwagon. With no investment experience, many bought Bitcoin and NFTs and sat back, waiting for the millions to arrive.
NFT and crypto prices plummeted in 2022 as people got distracted by the next shiny object, artificial intelligence (AI).
7. Male Romper Suits
It’s probably best if men leave this fashion trend in the past. In twenty-five years, the romper-suited men jumping around on TikTok can proudly share cringe-worthy photographs and videos with their families. Just like we laugh back on the jean short trends of the 80s.
8. Mini Fisherman Beanie Hats
A cute mini fisherman beanie hat may hide a balding spot or a bad hair day. We may think these teeny beanies are cool today, but this growing trend may not be around in twenty-five years.
9. Giant False Eyelashes
A bit of mascara is okay for fluttering eyelashes. But it’s hard to drag your eyes away from the enormous, thick, curling spider legs attached to a woman’s eyes that have become insanely popular on social media and TV.
10. Botox Lips
Each year, botox lips seem to be getting bigger. The fascination for pouting lips is becoming more popular as women jump on this trending bandwagon. One wonders whether this odd trend will dissipate and women will once again return to loving the lips that nature gave them.
11. Caterpillar Eyebrows
We seem to be on a bit of a theme here, but giant eyebrows are trending. Many years ago, women plucked their eyebrows so fine they were almost invisible. However, with the added dark eyebrow pencil line, women looked permanently surprised. Today, however, some trending eyebrows are like the blackest, fuzziest caterpillars on someone’s face.
12. Filming Everything
People film anything and everything today, from a road accident to recording a funny cat. Before offering assistance to someone in trouble, the phone comes out of the pocket, and the user hits the record button, hoping to create the next viral video.
13. Light Clothing Instead of Outerwear
This peculiar trend has become popular, though it makes little fashion sense. Wearing light or very little clothing hasn’t changed much over the last few decades, but wearing it outside instead of actual outerwear is just baffling.
14. Gender Reveal Parties
A lot of people are starting to opt out of gender reveal parties. After disastrous events, including wildfires caused by gender reveal parties, a lot of people aren’t seeing the point in having another party for the parents to be, especially if they result in injury or disaster.
15. Mommy Bloggers
Mommy bloggers have been trending in the past decades. Young moms share content on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok to drive traffic to their blogs. Many mommy bloggers have succeeded by building a following and selling merchandise, courses, and affiliate products from their blogs. But the practice has been under scrutiny in the past few years for the lack of privacy these videos afford to their children.
Today’s trends are tomorrow’s memories. Some trends we may look back on and wish they were still relevant. We may be happy to see others replaced with trends that may equally be as awkward, odd or downright wrong.
