There has been a lot of back and forth on whether or not Joe Biden is fit to run for a second presidential term. Although many have weighed his successes and failures and believe him to be a viable option, many more believe that the Democratic Party needs a fresh face to represent them in 2024.
Factors of Disqualification
Age has been the most-cited reason why Biden should step down in 2024. He is currently 80 years old, would be 82 by the time he took office again, and would be 86 when his term ended.
Biden’s consistently low approval ratings have also been a factor. When he took office, he took on many issues, including high inflation and Covid-19. Being burdened with these issues so early into his presidency did nothing for his approval ratings.
Biden has yet to formally announce his intent to run in 2024. He previously stated that he would be discussing the decision with his family over the holidays and would make the announcement sometime early in the year.
Biden has refused to disclose whether or not he and his family have reached a decision. When a reporter asked him if he had had the discussion with them, he quipped, “There’s an election coming up?”

In Come the Challengers
Mike Huckabee, the former governor of Arkansas, said that he believes Biden will face some fierce competition in 2024 in the primaries.
“He won’t have a solo run at this,” he said. “There will be other Democrats. Gavin Newsom, maybe some more moderate governors will jump in. But he will not have the stage to himself. Because I think a lot of Democrats realize, number one, he is already 80 years old. He will be 82 by the time the election will roll around. That is unprecedented. This is not the senior bowl. This is the toughest job in the world. He’s already shown he may not quite be up to it. “Will he run? Probably. But will he run unopposed in the Democrat primary? Absolutely not.”
California Governor Gavin Newsom is the candidate Biden would have to keep the closest eye on. Newsom has retained power and popularity in his state despite a recall attempt that ended in failure.
However, Newsom has remained adamant that he has no plans to run in 2024. Other challengers will likely emerge, however, and Huckabee is right in his idea that Biden won’t have an easy path to the White House.
