What are things you would never spend money on and don’t understand why others do? For example, food with gold flakes on it? What? After someone asked a popular online forum for examples of ridiculous purchases, here are the top-voted responses.

1. Lottery Tickets

The lottery is the number-one-voted massive waste of money that people confessed to not understanding why you spend money on tickets. However, one clarified that a couple of dollars here and there to entertain the dream is alright. But dropping hundreds to thousands of dollars on them is baffling.

2. Reddit Awards

The number-two-voted response is the infamous Reddit awards. One user explained they had received them numerous times, and the purpose of his admission was not to receive more. He legitimately doesn’t understand why you waste your money on them, and frankly, neither do I.

3. Timeshare Vacation Property

Many people in the thread suggested they would save money on travel timeshare vacation properties. Some suggested if you use them, they can be a great deal. However, most people do not use them.

Another explained that you have little input on the dates you desire most. As a result, you are limited to vacationing at one destination. The contracts are almost impossible to get out of; therefore, “it’s a scam.”

4. Designer Items

Designer wallets and handbags are a no-go for many. Spending hundreds to thousands of dollars on something to hold your money is “absurd” and a “hard pass” for some. Someone shared that they have a coworker who brags about their Gucci wallet that cost a grand. Ugh, nobody likes that guy. Don’t be that guy or gal.

5. Cable TV

Pull the plug on cable television already! Seriously, who is still flushing their money down the toilet? According to many in the thread, except for sports and news, cable television is lame and packed with advertisements.

6. Extravagant Weddings

It’s difficult for many Redditors to believe why people spend insane amounts of money on their weddings! For example, the idea seems ridiculous when that money could be used as a down payment on a home for starting your new life together rather than an expensive party that lasts a few hours while the debt can linger.

7. Funerals

Funerals are expensive, and many agree that funeral directors are often shameful, employing guilt trip tactics to make you spend more to “respect and honor” your loved one. Others elaborated that spending $10k+ a few days after losing someone you love is despicable.

8. Microtransactions

Talk about being out of the loop. Do you have to pay for features in video games that used to be earned or purchased with fake money you collected in the game? I did not know that, and what a freaking rip-off! Someone explained It is a terrible gaming trend that people should be against; I’m looking at you, Call of Duty, never again.”

9. Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) Pyramid Schemes

I will NEVER not include MLMs if it makes it on a list of scams and wastes of money! I have been there and done that a couple of times without realizing I wasn’t signing up for a product. Instead, I was opening myself up to being hounded and pressured into joining these “inverted sales funnels.”

At the time, I was a stay-at-home mother who had recently lost her left field of vision and couldn’t handle not making money, so I went for it. Needless to say, someone made money off me signing up, and that someone wasn’t me. Say no to being a “boss babe!” Unless your goal is to alienate friends and family and be discussed as a “sucker born every day.”

10. Diamonds

Finally, the diamond business model was called out for being an inflated, perceived value while creating high demand. The fact that people cling to this “rare” perception and pay ridiculous amounts of money for them when people are dying in mines for pennies a day to collect them is a reality leaving many in this Reddit thread scratching their heads.
